Supervision & Reflective Practice
Supervision, compassion and mindfulness-based reflective practice
There is a growing need for supervision and reflective practice or reflection groups in more and more areas of work and life. It is inevitable that we are impacted by others in positive ways as it is also inevitable that we can be affected in ways that challenge us. It is often useful to have a space to explore the personal, professional and private issues that can become intertwined as we navigate work and our out of work lives, our past and current life situations.
Quality work cannot be sustained alone. Our own being is the most important resource we use in our work and, with the changing nature of client needs, the community, organisations, institutions and families, it is imperative that we continue to learn and build new knowledge and skills to ensure we are held and supported with our own personal development, growth and reflective personal capacity. Expectations, professional best practice and quality of service demands are high and ever increasing and the work can be emotionally challenging.
Supervision and reflection sessions and groups with Compass Therapies use mindful and compassion-based techniques where our human potential can be shared and supported in an open hearted way, whilst focusing on work related themes.
We enter supervision with the spirit of explorers, adventurers with open minds and hearts to work collaboratively and creatively exploring work themes, issues and the impact they have.
Supervision and reflection practice groups and sessions can be short-term, longer-term or on-going depending on the individual / group / organisation needs or the focus topic. Supervision is collaborative, experiential and transformational.
Creativity in reflective practice and supervision
Creative supervision and reflective practice develops the dialogue between the areas of thought and logic (left hemisphere of the brain) and imagination and experience (right hemisphere of the brain). In addition to the usual methods of supervision, creative supervision incorporates working with metaphor, images, stories and other similar expressive media to understand the therapeutic process and the client – therapist relationship. In therapies, counselling, schools and the medical professions reflective practice is either mandatory or becoming more important. I am actively promoting the importance of a reflective practice and supervision in other industries where the impact of work may be significant on the work force.
